Project: progressive case export release

Build a case-export release for reviewer 62. The ordinary server-rendered link downloads an authorized case report and works without client script. An optional Save to folder action appears when the browser exposes the required file API and the rollout flag is enabled. The server still checks record authorization and issues a versioned export; neither the browser probe nor the flag changes permission. A canceled picker leaves the normal download available. A partial write is not called complete. The report path also uses a date formatter that needs optional compatibility code in one supported embedded web view. Load that code only when a report is opened on a device that lacks the native method, and keep a plain date fallback when the optional request fails. The build target must parse in every supported engine before runtime checks can start. Define a browser and device policy from real reviewer usage, including a low-end phone and the embedded station. Run the complete open, export, and confirm journey using keyboard and touch; test text composition when notes precede export. Roll out to a small cohort, record bounded outcome categories, and retain the server path through an observation window. A kill action must disable Save to folder without waiting for another client deploy. Retire the server path only after supported devices finish the same task and the team has a reversal plan.

Build contract

  • Preserve an authorized download when script, picker, or optional code fails.
  • Keep optional compatibility bytes off the initial dashboard path.
  • Verify exports by completion and server revision across target devices.
  • Roll back the enhancement without removing the existing task path.

Implementation checkpoint

javascript
function chooseCaseExport(release, device) {
  if (!release.authorized) return 'deny';
  if (!release.folderSaveEnabled || !device.filePicker) return 'server-download';
  return 'offer-both';
}
console.log(chooseCaseExport({ authorized: true, folderSaveEnabled: true }, { filePicker: false }));
// Output: server-download

Cost and boundaries

The feature probe is O(1), while file writing and download transfer cost O(report bytes). Deferred compatibility code saves initial parse and transfer work for people who never open a report, but adds a later request and another failure path. Two export routes also require two sets of completion, cancellation, and cleanup tests. Measure initial bundle bytes, optional code bytes, report completion rate, export latency, and peak memory on the lowest supported device. A support matrix that tests every possible combination is too expensive; gate each critical task on supported engines and add targeted device and input cases for platform boundaries.

Failure drill

Disable JavaScript and confirm the server link still downloads case 62. Present the file picker but have it throw, deny permission, cancel, and fail on close; none of those states may claim a finished local file. Block the optional formatter package in the embedded station and keep dates legible. Use an engine that rejects an untransformed syntax feature to test the build target. Open a 47-page report on a low-memory phone and take the server path if client preview fails. Switch accounts during a delayed export response and reject stale case data. Flip the release kill switch while an older tab remains open, then verify its next export uses the server route. Keep outcome logs free of case IDs and report bytes.

Acceptance checks

  • The baseline task works without JavaScript.
  • Optional code loads only on the report path that needs it.
  • Success is recorded after completed bytes and matching revision.
  • A kill action and old-tab path preserve export access.

Common Mistakes

  • Equating API presence with an export guarantee.
  • Shipping optional compatibility code on every dashboard view.
  • Removing the server route after one desktop trial.
