Pseudolocalization can expose text baked into a component, length assumptions, and untranslated fragments before language review. A prompt can specify test states and turn screenshots into candidate findings, but the rendered interface decides whether controls remain readable and operable. Test long labels, narrow widths, zoom, form errors, and dialogs. Do not confuse a pseudolocale pass with a real locale pass: the latter still needs script, direction, plural, input-method, and language checks. Record the viewport and state for every clipping report.
Localization prompts: use pseudolocale and real layout checks
Operational case
Harbor's HP-41 notice fits in the default desktop card but clips its final action at a narrow viewport after translation. A pseudolocale had already warned that the button width was fixed. The reviewer captures the real localized build at the failing width and traces the hidden action through keyboard focus. The component owner changes wrapping and sizing; the reviewer repeats the state with a long recipient name rather than approving a static screenshot alone.
HP-41 | state: delivery notice with final action
Viewport: narrow; zoom and long name included
Observed: action clipped by fixed-width card
Repair: component wraps without hiding the action
Retest: real locale plus keyboard operationPerformance and review cost
A matrix of V viewport settings, S states, and L locales requires O(VSL) targeted render checks. Shared component tests reduce repetition but do not replace a real translated page review. Prioritize states with required actions and known long strings; a huge screenshot set without interaction evidence can still miss a blocked task.
Common Mistakes
- Do not call a pseudolocale pass a language approval.
- Do not inspect only desktop idle state.
- Do not accept an action that is visible but cannot be operated.
